Concentration in Homeland Security
Course Overview:
The Social Science concentration in Homeland Security is an interdisciplinary degree, drawing from the areas of Criminal Justice, History, and Government. The courses making up the concentration will relate to the Critical Mission Areas identified in The National Strategy for Homeland Security.
The key areas of study are:
- Intelligence and Warning
- Border and Transportation Security
- Domestic Counterterrorism
- Protecting Critical Infrastructure and Key Areas
- Defending Against Catastrophic Threats
- Emergency Preparedness and Response
Students will:
- Learn the organization and processes of the criminal justice system and will develop a thorough understanding of the major vocabulary associated with homeland security.
- Study domestic and international terrorist organizations and their activities, and learn to recognize major organized crime organizations and their operations.
- Gain knowledge in the implementation of major strategies for disaster prevention and management and examine how terrorist organizations are formed both in the USA and abroad.
- Examine the major technological advances in detecting and preventing threats to homeland security.
